Three Types of Collectives
This research is based on a study conducted in South and Southeast Asia of three types of “emplaced collectives,” that are not commonly reflected upon together. By “emplaced collectives,” we mean collectives composed of human beings and possibly non-human entities (animals, trees, plants, spirits, deities) that take place in a specific place and are related by specific relationships and/or mutual obligations.
Cosmopolitan collectives
They have been intentionally created and involve people from a diversity of places and countries who engage in a common way of life
Preservationist endogenous collectives
They have been living in a place for generations and now struggle to maintain aspects of their way of being in the world that are valuable to them.
(Re)converting endogenous collectives
They bring together local populations who, in interaction with external actors, have chosen to change their way of life in order to foster or “return to” more sustainable relationships with the natural environment.
